Sherri-Ann Brooks, Derrick Atkins and Brendan Christian scored Caribbean wins, while Ethiopian Tirunesh Dibaba delivered a world record run at the Bislett Games Golden League track and field meet yesterday evening.

Brooks, of Jamaica, scored her win in the women's 100 metres, in 11.24 seconds.

Commonwealth Games champion Brooks snatched her 100-metre victory in a tight three-way finish that saw her edging American Bianca Knight (11.25) by only 0.01 seconds with the third-placed Russian Yulia Nestsiarenko finishing alongside them in 11.26.

Knight stepped up a place to capture the 200 in 22.56, defeating the Russian Yulia Gushchina (22.85) and Britain's Christine Ohuruogu (22.94). The Cayman Islands' Cydonie Mothersill placed fourth in 23.06 seconds, with Bahamian Debbie Ferguson (23.07) and Brooks (23.17) getting fifth and sixth, respectively.

Male winners

Bahamian Atkins won the men's 100 metres in a wind-assisted 9.98 seconds and Antiguan Christian landed the men's 200 metres in 20.39 seconds.

In the men's 100 metres, assisted by a following wind of 2.3 metres per second, Atkins, last year's World Championship 100-metre silver medallist, rebounded from his disappointing run at last weekend's Berlin Golden League to win ahead of American Michael Rodgers (10.04).

After a slow start in Berlin where he finished fifth behind Jamaican winner Nesta Carter, Atkins made no mistakes this time and won with authority over Rodgers. Trinidad and Tobago's Marc Burns placed third in 10.07 seconds and Jamaican Clement Campbell finished fifth in 10.19 seconds.

Christian, the reigning Pan American Games 200-metre champion, outgunned Ireland's Paul Hession (20.48) and Campbell (20.58) in the half-lap sprint.

Dibaba, a double world 10,000-metre champion, clocked a fabulous 14 minutes 11.15 seconds and crushed her 5,000-metre field to record a huge win. Kenya's Lucy Kabuu Wangui (14:33.49) was second. The new time smashes - by more than five seconds - the previous record of 14:16.63 by fellow Ethiopian Meseret Defar.

In the men's 400 metres, in which the world-number-one Jeremy Wariner, of the United States, returned to winning form, Bahamian Chris Brown posted a career-best run and national record for second spot. Brown, the Pan Am Games champion, lowered his personal best time from 44.45 to 44.40 as he chased Wariner in a brave effort.

Top three finish

Beaten by fellow American LaShawn Merritt in Berlin last Sunday, Wariner was impressive as he stopped the clock at 43.98 seconds, the first sub-44 clocking for the year. Costa Rica's Nery Brenes was third in 45.21 seconds while the Caribbean trio of Jamaican Ricardo Chambers (45.49), Trinidad and Tobago's Ato Stephens (45.62), and Sanjay Ayre (45.68), took fourth, fifth and sixth, respectively.

The Caribbean enjoyed another top-three finish through Jamaican Danny McFarlane in the men's 400-metre hurdles. The Olympic silver medallist led entering the straightaway and clocked a personal season's best 48.58 seconds for the runner-up spot behind American Bershawn Jackson, whose time of 48.15 was also his quickest this year.
