Determine Strikers top awardsDetermine Strikers were awarded with the top prize for the 2008 Institute of Sports (INSPORTS)/Jamaica National (JN) Money Transfer community netball competition at Wednesday's awards presentation ceremony in the National Stadium hospitality room.
Determine Strikers defeated Eden Strikers in the final. Determine Strikers also won the Opening Rally ahead of Papine/UTech and Alexander Strikers.
Determine Strikers walked away with $35,000 for winning the league competition while Eden Strikers received $20,000, Papine/UTech $15,000 and Delmax $10,000.
Parks Road was voted the most disciplined team; Papine/UTech the most improved and most punctual team while Rollington Town copped the most cooperative team.
Determine Strikers' Samantha White, captain of Jamaica's Under-16 netball team, was voted the most valuable player of the final.
Determine Strikers' Cecille Knight was voted the top coach while Delroy Mock-Yen of Delmax was voted the best manager.
Betta Price top domino
Betta Price emerged winners and collected $50,000 for winning the 2008 Institute of Sports (INSPORTS)/Jamaica National (JN) Money Transfer Community domino competition.
In the final, Betta Price defeated Gold Club 300-298. Gold Club received $25,000.
Betta Price led 155-128 at halftime of the final but Gold Club went in front and led 296-294 at the count down before going down by two points in the closing stages of the game.
In the third and fourth place playoff, Starlight defeated Highlight 300-272 to pick up $15,000 with the losers receiving $10,000. Starlight led 151-140 at halftime break.
Mason Hall, Jacks River victorious
The Island Sports Trust Primary Championships continued this week at the Eden Park Sports Complex in Jacks River, St. Mary.
In the lone football game on Wednesday, Zone B leaders Mason Hall Primary continued their unbeaten run with a 3-0 win over Mount Angus Primary. Nickalia Byfield, the league's leading goalscorer, scored twice while Sherrene Shephard netted in the 50th minute to seal the issue for Mason Hall.
On Thursday, Jacks River Primary, led by a brace from captain Shemone Carter, scored an exciting 2-1 come-from-behind win over Oracabessa Primary. Teveisha Simmonds opened the scoring for the Oracabessa Primary team but intense pressure by the Jacks River Primary forwards ensured their team levelled the score going into halftime.
Jacks River kept up the pressure and grabbed the lead 10 minutes after the break and held on to win.
Action continues next Tuesday at the same venue.
Prep School TT
Portmore Missionary One retained their Prep schools table tennis title on Tuesday with a come-from-behind 3-2 victory over Sts Peter & Paul.
The final, sponsored for the 15th consecutive year by Oliver's Decorating & Manufacturing Co. Ltd, was played at the Hy-Performance Centre in Kingston.
In the play-off for third place, the number two team from Portmore Missionary, Portmore Missionary Two, edged Vaz One.
In the individual singles section, Chelsea Durrant of Portmore Missionary and Ricardo Mills of Vaz were crowned champions.
In the team final, Sts Peter and Paul won the first two matches to take a 2-0 lead but Portmore Missionary won the next three.
Portmore Missionary's charge started in the third match where Durrant trounced Toni-Ann Tapper 3-0. In the fourth, Jordon Collington downed Sean White 3-0 and national cadet player Korey Moulton overpowered Vincent Zhong by the same margin to clinch match number five and secure the win for Portmore Missionary.
Portland 20/20 cricket
Round six of the Portland 20/20 community cricket competition continues tomorrow with a full slate of matches.
Joint Zone Two leaders Chetstowe and Swift River, on 12 points each, host Westport Seniors and St. George's respectively.
Zone One leaders Bourban, on 12 points from five games, face Tigry at Canewood Ground. Kensington, second in Zone One, entertain Balcarres at Charles Town.
Schewberry take on Port Antonio Police Youth Club at Skibo Oval. All these games will start at 10:30 a.m.
In the 2:30 p.m. match-ups, Oneaissante take on Sunshine at Canewood, Portland Masters face Rock Hall at Chetstowe, Black Hill host Orange Ball at Skibo and Shirley Castle await Bybrook at Swift River.
In last week's action, Bourban 123 all out in 18 overs (Patrick Thompson; Michael Meirkle John 2-7) beat Portland Masters 119 (Everrel McPherson 3-26).
Oneaissante 254 for two off 16.5 overs (Omar Clarke 72, Robert Weir 55 not out, Jerven Gibson 54 not out) beat Spring Hill 122 all out.
Starfish 'star' in domino final
Starfish Trelawny won their first all-island hotels domino championship with a mild upset over previously unbeaten Tryall Hotel.
In the final played on Wednesday at Tryall Hotel, Starfish won 200-172.
Tryall went into the final unbeaten, winning all eight matches, including a 150-113 win over the new champions and an impressive 200-50 romp over former champions Half Moon Hotel in their semi-final last Thursday.
Hotel manager John McIntosh, who played in every match, was pleased with his team's efforts and was particular happy that another SuperClubs property, only the second, had carved its name on the Western Hotels Sports Association all-island hotels domino championship trophy.
Austin wins Hot Shots pool tournament
Everett Austin from Mystix won the Pool Tables & Billiards-sponsored Hot Shots 'B' class pool tournament last weekend when he defeated Hugh Stewart 3-1 in the best-of-five final at Hot Shots Pool Bar on Sunday.
Austin won six matches en route to the title and, having captured the Auto Craze B class tournament a year ago, is now classified as an A class player.
He defeated Marvin Gray from Hot Shots 3-0 in the semi-final to set up the final with Stewart, who beat Chelsea's Andrew Chang 3-1 in the other semi-final.
Austin captured the $35,000 cash prize and Hot Shots Trophy. Stewart secured $20,000 and a trophy, while Chang beat Gray 3-1 in the third-place playoff to secure $10,000.
In terms of entries, this was the best supported tournament in the past year having attracted 75 entries not to mention good crowd support. Trophies and prizes were presented by Sophia Smith, representing Hot Shots Pool Bar.
Mystix will stage the next tournament on June 28 and 29, this for A and B class players.
Wray & Nephew skittles competition
League leaders Eastern All-Stars clipped defending champions Rowe's Strikers 6-5 in the feature match of the Wray & Nephew Premier League skittles competition at Bejon's Sports Bar, Hughenden Plaza, last Sunday.
The teams were locked at 5-5 going into the 11th and final game and former singles champion Hubert Fletcher pulled it off for Eastern with a typical classy display, beating Rowe's captain Garfield 'Milligram' Samuels in the decider via sinkers. Other winning players for Eastern were former singles champions Keith Barrett and Nehemiah 'Fatta' Henry and captain Lloyd Smith.
In another Premier League match played last Sunday, Cherry's Strikers beat high-riding Meadowvale 8-3 at the same venue, while in Major League action, Mister C beat Portmore's The Dip 7-4 to make it three in a row.
The competition continues tomorrow with play in both leagues.
