Saxophonist Yolanda Brown.
Christian saxophonist Yolanda Brown is an artiste making a big impact. She spoke to Soul Stirrings about her talent, faith and future.
Soul Stirrings: What made you decide to become a saxophonist?
Yolanda Brown: I felt I needed to play an instrument that let me connect a bit more to the music. The tenor sax was the solution! I loved the sound of the saxophone and felt I could create music that came from my soul.
How has the music industry and public responded to you being female and a saxophonist?
The response has been amazing! I don't think it's so much about being a female saxophonist but rather the personality and emotion that comes, through my music. I have had three sold-out solo concerts over the past 10 months and I am really pleased that people have embraced me.
What role did faith in God play during your childhood?
Faith has always been important to me and even more so the values that come with having faith in God. Faith, morals, humility, love and charity were instilled from an early age and as I grew older the understanding of having a relationship with God and making sure that I carry those values to every aspect of my life has been very important to me.
How does your faith in God impact the music you play?
The most important thing faith has given me is knowing that playing the sax is God's purpose for me. I always have a gospel set at my concerts and when playing at gospel events I get the chance to almost refuel and worship!
You have been very aggressive in marketing yourself. Why?
Black Grape Productions has done an amazing job pushing the project independently and it also allows us to communicate who Yolanda Brown is and what I do. By doing this prospective labels can understand how it is possible for a saxophonist to be a solo artist to a mainstream audience of all ages. I have had a few offers from some record labels so watch this space!
You have performed all over the world. What's been your most memorable gig?
Aside from my solo concerts a really memorable show was 'Festival of Life' in London where I ministered to over 20,000 people. I remember playing a medley of African praise songs; having the whole audience dancing, singing and praising with me was awesome. It was a powerful night for me!
You are also an academic and currently studying for a PhD. Why have you decided to pursue further education?
I love to follow what interests me to the fullest. I remember finishing my dissertation for my master's in European management Science and thinking - 'this could still go further!'. So I applied for funding for a PhD and it was approved. I just feel that I am carrying on the research that I started and have an interest and a passion for Management Science as a discipline.
What should we expect from Yolanda Brown in the next 12 months?
I will have my debut album ready with music videos, collaborations and great music. I will continue my run of sold out shows and have one year left of my PhD. I will continue to push the boundaries and also be re-enforcing the true Yolanda Brown sound.
