Icon: Hugh Mundell

Claim to fame: Roots-reggae singer whose album Africa Must Be Free By 1983 remains one of the genre's critically acclaimed works. Recorded in 1978 when Mundell was 16; produced by Augustus Pablo.

The influential Rolling Stone magazine gave the album an astounding five stars.

Mundell, the title of another Hugh Mundell album, was produced by Henry 'Junjo' Lawes. It was released in 1982.

Also recorded as Jah Levi.

Was one of several young acts Pablo mentored at his Rockers label. Others included Jacob Miller and Yami Bolo.

Mundell produced Speak The Truth, singer Junior Reid's first album.

Hugh Mundell was shot and killed by a gunman in Grants Pen, St Andrew, in October 1983. He was 21 years old. Junior Reid was in his car when the singer was shot.
