Sporting Central tackle Boys' Town
published: Sunday | March 16, 2008

Nodley Wright, Freelance Writer

FOLLOWING THEIR surprising 3-0 thumping of title hopefuls Waterhouse last Sunday, relegation battlers Sporting Central will share the spotlight today when they travel to Collie Smith Drive to take on the in-form Boys' Town in one of four games.

Portmore United against Village United and the Harbour View/ Waterhouse clash will be played at a later date.

With six matches, including today's fixtures, to go in the Cash Plus Premier League (CPPL), Boys' Town are still within striking distance of leaders Portmore United and second-placed Tivoli Gardens, who they trail by eight and seven points, respectively. Along with Village United, they share the best record of the third round with four wins and one draw to sit at second in the third-round table to Village United on goal difference with 13 points.

Close to relegation

Another three points could see them closing the gap on Portmore United, currently on engagements in the Cayman Islands. The gap on Tivoli could also be narrowed if the unlikely happens and they fail to dispose of struggling Reno at the Edward Seaga Stadium.

Sporting Central are hovering too close to the relegation zone for their liking. The 3-0 win over Waterhouse showed more than anything else their determination to stay in the league and for them to do so they will need more result like last week's. What would convince even more is a favourable result over Boys' Town today.

In goalkeeper Leighton Murray, Hughan Gray, Karl Wiggan, Winston Griffiths, who came off the bench to score last week, the Ford brothers, Dwayne and Oneke, as well as the Gardner brothers, Greg and Valentine, they have good enough players.

Boys' Town hopes

Boys' Town will rely on last season's most valuable player, George Vernal, Denzil Watson, Renae Lloyd, veteran goalscorer Oneil McDonald and Fabian Watkins to give them a favourable result.

At the Edward Seaga Stadium, Tivoli Gardens should continue their good run of form and retake the lead of the competition. The loss of Oraine Simpson, Navion Boyd and Christopher Jackson to national duty has not affected them much, but for that heavy defeat to Portmore United. Reno have looked a shadow of the team which showed much promise last season.

Jerome Waite did a lot to stabilise Arnett Gardens, but despite his best efforts, the former champions have slipped back into danger zone. They are just three points and one place above relegation. An away fixture to St Georges is always difficult.
