Go-karters back on track today

After the frolic and fun at last Friday night's awards and presentation ceremony, where the 2007 champions were recognised, go-karters will return to the track today, as the local championship resumes at the Palisadoes International Raceway, Kingston.

Fresh from the Florida Winter Tour (FWT), which concluded in Ocala last Sunday, the young karters are expected to demonstrate some of what they learnt at the overseas championship.

Colin Daley Jr, Mark Anthony Eaton and Thomas Issa are among some of those expected to do well on the track today. The qualifying session begins at about 8:00 a.m., while the first race should get under way three hours later.

Teen sensation

All eyes will focus on 19-year-old Dane Lawson, who's manager, Sammy Law, of New Life Pharmacy, recently purchased an AMV Italian racing kart for today's meet.

"It is a 2008 chase, complete with front brakes," said Peter Rae, Lawson's driving coach.

But up to Friday morning, there were doubts whether Lawson would be fit enough to compete in today's meet. Reports are that he met in accident on Thursday in Clarendon. The car he was driving was extensively damaged.

"When I saw the car, I didn't know he survived. He was unconscious for about 20 minutes after the accident, but when he woke in the hospital this morning (Friday), he was not complaining of pain or anything. The doctors kept him in for observation," said Dad, Douglas Lawson.
