Chelsea set sights back on premiership
published: Wednesday | March 12, 2008

LONDON (AP):

Chelsea is turning its focus back to the Premier League after another cup disappointment.Chelsea manager Avram Grant is under pressure after the Blues were beaten by lower-league Barnsley 1-0 in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup on Saturday - two weeks after a 2-1 loss to Tottenham in the League Cup final.

Now the Blues have two competitions left to aim for - the Premier League, where they are in third place, eight points behind leader Arsenal, and the Champions League, where they will find out their quarter-final opponent on Friday.

"I want to win a trophy this season," Grant said. "I wanted it before. The pressure to win trophies is better than the pressure at the bottom of the league. I don't want that.

"We need to be more consistent but, sometimes, when you change to a different style of football there are problems in the way. I never enjoy losing, but I still enjoy this."

First up, Chelsea is at home Wednesday against relegation-bound Derby and Grant hopes a win will ease speculation that his job may be in danger.

"I know that at Chelsea, like a lot of big clubs, every loss is a crisis but it's not like that," Grant said. "I'm not under any more pressure than I was before, and I'm not under any less."

While Grant's position is in doubt, Derby counterpart Paul Jewell knows his job is secure even if the Rams go down. Jewell has not failed to win a league game since arriving at Derby in November.

Loved by fans

"Avram has taken over from Jose Mourinho (in September), who was a massive personality and was loved by the Chelsea fans," Jewell said.

"They were only going to put up with it while Grant was winning games. As soon as he loses a couple of games the knives were always going to be out for him. I would imagine he has to win something - but even then for some people it might not be enough."

Chelsea was without striker Didier Drogba and midfielder Frank Lampard against Barnsley, but the three-man attack fielded by Grant only had four shots on target.

"The tactics were right," forward Nicolas Anelka said. "The criticism must be about the players because we didn't play well and we have to accept the fact. We know the media will be after the manager but you know as players when you played well and ... we didn't."

Also Wednesday, Aston Villa hosts Middlesbrough and Portsmouth plays Birmingham.

Like Chelsea, Middlesbrough lost to a lower-league club in the FA Cup falling to Cardiff 2-0. Boro manager Gareth Southgate said he and his players were "massively disappointed" and had to accept criticism.
