NOTE-WORTHY: Leading the way
published: Wednesday | March 12, 2008

Leading the way

With regard to the editorial in The Sunday Gleaner titled 'Government must lead by example', let me agree with everything that was said.

People must be given a reason to move back downtown and there would be no greater example than the government leading the way. There are some symbols that are very important in any transition; we need a centrepiece to build around.

I live in Atlanta, Georgia, and that city downtown was revitalised turning a lot of the old factories into lofts for young people who was just entering the workforce. I am a true believer in the saying, where there is a will there is a way.

Solar for tourism

I should like to bring to the attention of the Minister of Tourism, Edmund Bartlett, the article in the Hospitality publication of February 20.

It states that the power bills of some north coast resort hotels are between $12 million and $18 million per month. Is this not sufficient motivation for the hotels to install wind turbine and solar voltaic systems to save our country foreign exchange on our oil bill?

Perhaps the government in view of these horrendous oil bills could assist the hotels to finance the project.

No to fare rise

I am sending a letter to the Minister of Transport and Works to the effect that with utility bills so high a fare increase to bus and taxi operators the cost of living will go up and put the country deeper into pain.

The high oil price has created a financial problem and high food prices. The citizens are broke and struggling. I am a server in the Anglican Church of Jamaica and the Cayman Islands and, as a server for God, I cannot sit and let the citizens suffer any longer.

Searching for ...

I want to locate my father John Paul Whyte or any of his children. Their names are Marcus, Rose, Renee, Camille and Nicole Whyte.

My grandmother is Bernadette Jones. She is known as Miss Pat. If she is living, she would be in her late 90s.

You may contact me at judithkw@yahoo.com
