Village, H View face off
published: Sunday | December 30, 2007

Nodley Wright, Freelance Writer

FORMER NATIONAL representative Paul 'Tegat' Davis will continue his rescue act with Village United this afternoon when the Trelawny-based outfit hosts defending champions Harbour View at the Elliston Wakeland Centre in one of six matches in the Cash Plus Premier League.

After labouring hard through 12 matches, Village United struck it lucky last Sunday in their 13th match with a 2-1 win over St. Georges. Davis is hoping that win will spur his charges on to further glory.

"We will approach this game just like we approached the previous one," a relaxed Davis told The Sunday Gleaner ahead of today's 3:00 p.m. encounter.

"The target that we have set ourselves right now is to get at least 20 points by the end of January. The whole team is quite upbeat right now. They are working really hard and I see no reason why we should not get three points," added Davis whose team remained rooted at the bottom of the table on eight points, five below nearest side August Town.

Not easy to topple

While Davis is confident his players will deliver once more, he recognises that the defending champions, who themselves have not had the best season so far, will not be easy to topple.

"We understand that Harbour View will not come and just sit around and allow us to play. We will have to fight for everything that we want and we know it will not be easy. One of the major problems the team had was not taking the chances and once we do that we should be in a good situation," said the coach who will have to do without one of his better players today in Deveron Clarke, who will sit out the game due to an accumulation of yellow cards.

Eyeing a good game

Harbour View's Lenworth Hyde Sr, a former teammate of Davis, is eyeing a good performance from his players. Like Village United, his team enjoyed a first last Sunday, a strike from last season's find, Kavin Bryan.

"We are expecting good perfor-mances from them. They have looked good in training," Hyde said of his players. "One of the good things is that Kavin Bryan scored his first goal against Reno last week and once the two forwards, himself and Fabian Taylor, click, then we should do well."

In looking at the game, Hyde said he expects a very tough fight from the opposition, especially based on the fact that their spirit should have improved after their first win and that they are playing at home.

Village, he said, were responding well to new coach Davis but his team, he maintained, had enough quality to get the better of Village.

While he will have to do without Jermaine Taylor and Robert Scarlett in defence, there will still be the likes of Christopher Harvey, Oneil Smith, Lovel Palmer, Donald Stewart, Richard Edwards, Jermaine Hue, Keith Kelly, Fabian Taylor and Bryan to lead the charge.

Village United will look to Fabian Dawkins, Leon Irving, Omar Allen, Troy Smith, Oneil Robinson, Ian McAnuff, Lacon Brissett and Everett Mullings to stand up for them.

Seeking revenge

In other games on today, Waterhouse should just be given the edge over Arnett Gardens when they meet at Drewsland. Arnett Gardens have got themselves in good positions for most of the season but have not managed to pull away from the opposition, while Waterhouse appear to have refocused under new coach Wayne Fairclough.

The win over Portmore United should have done a world of good to the confidence of the Waterhouse aggregation.

Reno should still be smarting from their 4-3 first-round loss to Sporting Central and would want to exact some amount of revenge over them. Both teams have looked better since but neither has managed to really set the league alight. A draw appears the most likely result, while a Reno win cannot be ruled out.

St. Georges are almost impreg-nable at Lynch Park and should be expected to beat August Town there, while the Tivoli Gardens/Seba United game could go either way.

Leaders Portmore United should get the better of Boys' Town but not by a big margin.

In terms of talent available, Portmore United are very much ahead of Boys' Town, but in terms of commitment and fight, few match-up favourably with Boys' Town.
