The Editor, Sir:
To avoid dealing with issues of sex, sexuality and HIV/AIDS in schools in this era is ridiculous. As a people we need to get with the programme and raise awareness as to how to take better care of ourselves and help make informed choices for our youth. We have to equip our young people with the tools for better, more responsible sexual lives.
If schools continue to shy away from dealing with matters relating to sex, sexuality and HIV/AIDS, how must children acquire the knowledge to survive these very serious times? The Church, parents and other important figures are not reliable in this regard, so schools should take responsibility.
Thanks to Mrs. Bryan, my sex education teacher at my alma mater (Holmwood) who taught me about sex, sexuality and STDs, as a grown man and father, I am able discuss confidently with my sons those values given to me by her. I am able to conduct talks with my sons about the changing face of sexuality and STDs in this society, and the importance of knowing about these highly sensitive issues. Come on Jamaica, it's time you wake up and face the music!
I am, etc.,
