Councillors being bribed?
As Jamaica continues to slide down the corruption index, the article by Devon Dick in Tuesday's paper was timely.
I found his comment, "It is well known or alleged that parish council officers and traffic cops take bribes" especially interesting. For while the allegations against traffic cops are well known, I always thought I was the only one who alleged that some parish council officials were taking bribes not to enforce zoning and other laws affecting residents in urban areas!
Maybe Rev. Dick would like to expound more on these allegations as it relates to parish council officers, so that those in charge can start doing something about the problem 'for the first time at last'!
On a related matter, may I suggest to residents in residential areas who cannot get assistance from sitting councillors in addressing parochial issues such as zoning regulations, that they vote against such ineffective councillors come December 5.

CALABAR will miss Herb Mckenley
As a young student at Calabar High school in the early '60s ,it was my privilege to see Herb McKenley up close on numerous occasions. For several years, this old boy was the coach of a winning Calabar track team. It was impossible to miss him in a crowd.
He was a tall, graceful man of regal bearing. It was some time before I became aware of the amazing accomplishments of this modest man and the love and respect the athletic world had for him. Calabar will always be proud that it helped produce one of the finest athletes and gentlemen the world has ever seen. Our school motto, 'The Utmost For The Highest', was always his guide. Calabar will miss him; Jamaica will miss him; the world will miss him.

A disgrace to our country
I can't believe that anyone in any society, under any circumstances would attempt to take the life of innocent children. And apparently these are random attacks for political reasons. The blood of all these victims is on the hands of these 'eediot gunmen' who bring shame and disgrace to your beautiful island. It is also on the hands of the politicians who bring the guns to these inner-city communities and fund the killing of innocent children. These people are a disgrace to an otherwise beautiful country.
