LETTER OF THE DAY - How to eliminate violence in schools
published: Wednesday | November 28, 2007

The Editor, Sir:

This is a letter for the Minister of Education suggesting ways how to eliminate violence in schools.

Dear Minister, the violence in schools is getting out of control and this has to stop because we love our children. Parents, teach your child at home how to show love before they go off to school.

Mr Minister these are a few steps to stop it:

1. Establish a police office in all schools to stop the violence.

2. Have counselling offices in all schools so that the police who is assigned to the school can help assist the guidance counsellor.

3. Establish a family centre at the school where assistance can be given to students who have problems at home.

4. When a student kills another student he/she most face serious rehabilitation with good counselling.

5. The Church can assist in the rehabilitation to have godly and disciplined schools

6. The police most search all students entering the compound.

7. Minister your presence is needed there much of the time to see the progress.

The teachers need help minister, and when I say this I mean long-term help. For too long the teachers are working with a low salary and they have to be parent, counsellors and teachers at school; so parents at home, I am also calling on you to help by training your child in the right at home. Fathers do not leave the responsibility only on the mothers; you must be a man.

Mr. minister I am a server in the Anglican Church in Jamaica and I feel so sad when I hear or see these things happen among our children and this is not good for the nation. My sympathy goes out to the Jamaica College family and also the parent of that child who fell victim of violence at the school. I will pray for the schools and if you want me to assist I will be happy to do so, Mr. Minister let us try and develop the schools in this way, and students live good with everyone of your classmates. God Bless you. One love.

I am, etc.,
