The Editor, Sir:With reference to the editorial in today's Gleaner, (November 24, 2007) 'The Misery of Traffic Gridlock', I would like to mention one problem I have seen. The stop lights at major intersections are not observed, and motorists cross when the light changes to amber, blocking the intersection leaving little or no movement for other traffic.
I had this experience this very morning at the intersection of Shortwood and Constant Spring Roads. Two mornings ago a policeman was placed at that intersection and there was no problem, everyone observed the traffic rules and all the policeman did was just to stand at one corner.
I agree that the traffic is a problem, but my contention is that the serious problem is caused by the total disregard for the rules of the road code. It is a traffic violation to block any intersection, be it a minor road or major intersection or even someone's premises. I think the Traffic Department should declare one day 'Road Code Day' and see how many people would be charged for traffic violations.
I am, etc.,
