Golding to address Nat'l Planning Summit

MONTEGO BAY, ST. JAMES:

Prime Minister, Bruce Golding will address the opening session of a two-day National Planning Summit set for November 2-4 at the Ritz-Carlton hotel in Montego Bay.

The summit is being presented by the Government in association with the Private Sector Organi-sation of Jamaica (PSOJ) and Pricewaterhouse-Coopers.

Presented under the theme 'Jamaica Tomorrow', the National Planning Summit will bring together a broad coalition of senior government ministers under the leadership of Prime Minister Bruce Golding, local and international private sector leaders, leading public sector representatives and non-government organisations.

The parties will be examining a shared national vision for the future, high-level plans required to bring the vision to life and the specific initiatives that will ensure the success of the plan.

The overall objective of the summit is to arrive at a broad consensus on the critical initiatives that will drive economic growth and sustainable development for Jamaica.

Realtors association elect new president

ST. ANDREW:

Edwin Wint of La Maison Property Services Limited was elected as president of the Realtors Association of Jamaica (RAJ) at its annual general meeting last Tuesday at the Terra Nova Hotel in St. Andrew.

Other members of the incoming executive are first vice-president, Canute McFarlane of Scorpio Investments & Realty Limited; second vice president, Deborah Cumming of Century 21 Heave-Ho Properties; treasurer, Joyce McEachron of McEachron & Clarke Real Estate, and honorary secretary, Carlene Sinclair of Property Solutions Limited.

The evening's guest speaker was Dr. Horace Chang, Minister of Water & Housing, who addressed the members on the theme 'The important role of real estate in Jamaica's national development'.

Mullings to speak on PetroCaribe

ST. ANDREW:

Clive Mullings, Minister of Energy Mining and Telecommuni-cations, is expected to speak about the PetroCaribe agreement and its implication for the industry tonight at an IGL employee long-service award dinner at the Pegasus hotel.

Mr. Mullings will be speaking with particular regard to the way the agreement will affect the liquefied petroleum market. Proceedings start at 7:30 p.m.

Support for grassroots communities

KINGSTON:

With the assistance of the Women's Resource and Outreach Centre (WROC), some 17 communities in St. Thomas, Clarendon, St. Catherine and Kingston are receiving the kind of help, which will permit recovery from Hurricane Dean and recent flooding in a sustainable way.

Communities located in three clusters in St. Thomas - Trinityville Extension, White Horses/Pamphret/ Botany Bay and the Johnson Mountain/Spring Bank - through this non-governmental organisation, have been supplied with emergency supplies as well as training in business development.

Other communities were Gravel Hill and Lionel Town in Clarendon and Linstead in St. Catherine.

According to Suzette Thompson, coordinator of the Sustainable Livelihoods project for the grassroots organisation located at 47 Beechwood Avenue, WROC is partnering with Christian Aid, the United Nations Development Programme, the Commonwealth Foundation, HEART/NTA, RADA and the Office of Disaster and Emergency Management in order to provide rehabilitation and training.

Fund run on for November

KINGSTON:

The Heart Foundation of Jamaica and Wisynco Group Limited will on November 1 launch the 28th staging of the Heart Health Fund Run.

This year the run is entitled Welch's/Wata Heart Health Fund Run as the two entities partner in an effort to fight heart disease in Jamaica.

One of the main objectives of the run is to show the benefits of exercise to a healthy heart.

With this in mind, persons are invited to run, walk or jog at their own pace at the National Stadium East on the day of the run.

Companies, individuals, families and more are invited to form their teams and collect sponsorship forms and flyers at the office of the Heart Foundation of Jamaica.

Jamalco gets children reading

CLARENDON:

The libraries of 10 primary and all-age schools in Clarendon are now better equipped through a recent donation of books from Jamalco.

The beneficiary institutions are: Osborne Store and Chandler's Pen Primary and Junior High; Chapelton, Crooked River and Rock River all-ages; and Moravia, Victoria, Anderson Town and Coffee Piece primary schools.

Speaking at the handover ceremony held at the Osborne Store Primary School, Jamalco's Public Relations and Media Specialist, Ealane Livingston-Smith, urged the students to read to improve their vocabulary and learn about a wide range of topics.

The books were sourced in the United States, with the Alcoa Foundation and Jamalco underwriting the cost of shipping, handling, storage and distribution.

Nat'l Family Planning Board adopts home

ST. ANDREW:

The National Family Planning Board, in celebration of its 40th year of existence, visited the Wilson Home last Tuesday bearing gifts of food and household items.

The board's staff club members led by Alphanso Williams, president of the staff club, and vice-president Ann-Marie Johnson extended a charitable arm by formally adopting the home, an affiliation which began in January of this year.

The National Family Planning Board started its 40th anniversary celebrations for the week with a church service at the St. Stephen's United Church in Cross Roads last Sunday, and continued its celebrations throughout the week with a Marge Roper free contraceptives open day on Wednesday, followed by a distribution of condoms in and around the locales of Half-Way Tree Road and the Cross Roads area on Thursday.
