WESTERN BUREAU:

SPALDING AND Glengoffe were delayed in their bids to march into the inter-zone round of the ISSA/Pepsi/Digicel daCosta Cup yesterday when one opponent failed to prepare their home field and the other turned up with insufficient players.

Spalding, who needed a point from their game against Knox to become the first inter-zone qualifiers from Zone G, saw the game blown off after their opponents, who turned up with only seven players, and had another of their team hurt in the early going which left them with only six players - below the legal limit for a game.

"After 15 minutes, one of the players got hurt and had to be taken off so the referee played it by the book and blew off the game," said Junior Brown, the sports master at Spalding. "I see no reasons why we should not be awarded full points for this game."

Wait for ruling

Glengoffe, who needed a point from their Zone J game against Bog Walk, turned up at the Bog Walk ground to find an unprepared field, which leaves them with no choice but to wait on the Inter-Secondary School Sports Association (ISSA) to a ruling on the outcome of the game.

While Spalding and Glengoffe were being frustrated, Zone D front-runners Cedric Titus and Ocho Rios secured the two inter-zone places from the group when they came out impressive 5-1 and 3-0 winners over Marcus Garvey and Brown's Town respectively. The qualifiers remain joint leaders of the group on 19 points.

In other crucial games yesterday, champions Glenmuir failed in their bid to avenge their first-round 1-0 loss to Garvey Maceo when the teams battled to a 1-1 draw, which leaves Garvey Maceo still ahead in the group with 17 points, four more than Glenmuir.

Over in western Jamaica, former champions Rusea's avenge their first-round loss to the previously unbeaten Frome Technical with a hard-fought 1-0 victory in their return Zone B fixture in Lucea.

Roydell Moncriffe's lone goal was enough for Rusea's, which took them to 18 points. Frome, who have an outstanding game, are now in second place on 15 points.

In the big Montego Bay super derby at Jarrett Park, Cornwall College thrashed Herbert Morrison 3-0 courtesy of goals by Michael Allen, Radcliffe Hall and skipper Edward Campbell. The victory took Cornwall College back to the top of Zone A with 15 points - two more than St. James High who were inactive yesterday.

Yesterday's results

  • Zone A: Cornwall 3 Herbert Morrison 0.

  • Zone B: Rusea's 1 Frome 0.

  • Zone D: Marcus Garvey 0 Ocho Rios 3,

    Brown's Town 1 Cedric Titus 5.

  • Zone I: Glenmuir 1 Garvey Maceo 1.
