Good move to hire top cop
published: Sunday | October 14, 2007

The Editor, Sir:

I think the police officers in Jamaica are missing the point here, and as usual, dismissing the lessons history has taught us. The police force in Jamaica is corrupt from the top down and has always been a political entity rather than a 'true' law-enforcement body.

The powers that be should look at the appointment as a business appointment. If history tells you that appointments from within are not delivering and crime continues to dominate the country, then try a different method.

I strongly endorse hiring from the outside so we have a new pair of eyes that can see things from an objective point of view rather than a person to continue the legacy of cronyism which has dominated the force since the late '70s.

I am, etc.,

RAY
