The Editor, Sir:The outcome of the hearing on dual citizenship could be detrimental to the political landscape of Jamaica. If the relevant section of the Constitution must now be reviewed and implemented, then it must be instituted as the law of the land and every measure taken to prevent it from happening again.
The names of the previous persons who ran for elected office, win or lose, must be disclosed to the people of the land. If the JLP candidate is found to have violated the Constitution, there must be a by-election and the people must choose their representative.
We who live abroad, who were encouraged to become citizens of our new home, for the many reasons stated when officials visited us, who have been sending our money, our resources for which many on the island are dependent, must now weigh our contribution and our future final place of residence. We will not be able to return to Jamaica, become active and use our activism to mobilise healthy strong communities.
I would have to give up my U.S.A. citizenship, give up my passport and all the benefits for which I worked and saved after sharing half with Jamaica during my heyday before I could list my name as a candidate for election. Now, suppose I lose the election, do I crawl back to the U.S.A. to get back my benefits and access? Who is going to support me on the island?
Yes, let us use the Constitution to build a better nation. We must have watchdogs to monitor every unconstitutional law and not turn a blind eye or open our eyes only to party politics.
I am, etc.,
