Wake up, Jamaica!
published: Wednesday | October 10, 2007

The Editor, Sir:

I am a Jamaican who has visited quite a few states in North America and another island in the Caribbean. None of these has even come close to gaining the love and admiration I have for my home, Jamaica.

My heart sinks when I read negative articles about my country. Many people have admitted to me that Jamaica is their number one choice for a vacation. However, the increasing crime rate has literally sent shivers up their spines.

Jamaica should be known for our beautiful beaches, luxurious and cost-friendly hotels, mouth-watering food, legendary reggae music, lively dancehall scene, tropical climate and colourful, amiable people!

Pollution and crime are not economic boosters! So until some are ready to prove that they love our little island, as much as I do, we will continue to have negative articles, decreased foreign exchange from a fall in the tourist industry and mediocre infrastructure as a result of roads being blocked by frustrated citizens and other framework being destroyed.

We have a lot of potential as a people. We have been playing around for too long. A change in government won't decrease the crime rate if we do not let it!

I am, etc.,
