The Editor, Sir:
In an era when there is much lamentation about the poor performances of our students in exams, we must highlight the positives.
St. Catherine High School, in the 2007 CXC CSEC examinations, provided an example of what can be achieved by dedicated teachers, hard-working students and the continued acknowledgement of outstanding academic efforts.
Not to be taken lightly
One student, O'Devon Buckley gained passes in nine subjects all with grade one. Two other students gained passes in nine subjects while 41 students had passes in 8 subjects. In fact, 50 per cent of the graduating class passed five or more subjects, resulting in a lower sixth-form class of close to 150 students. Buckley's performance just bettered that of Tracy-Ann Brooks in 2006, who gained eight grade ones. That the most outstanding performance in 2007 was a male student must not be taken lightly.
These results are not by accident but were possible only through diligent work by the teaching staff and disciplined application by the students. Special commendations to the grade coordinators, Ms. Joan Wint and Ms. Paulette Wedderburn, whose dedication to the students and their passion for excellence led them to embark on a special programme of publicly and formally recognising and rewarding outstanding academic performances from as early as when these students were in grade nine, and continuing that process through to grade 11. This has proven to be a significant motivating factor.
I am, etc.,
