Youth for the military
published: Wednesday | October 10, 2007

The Editor, Sir:

To the extent that youth involved in a military programme serves the purpose of preparing them to defend Jamaica in the event of an invasion or attack from a foreign country or countries, I'd say this is a good idea. If the idea is that we'll prepare Jamaican youth to join foreign militaries to participate in the killing of other peoples, then they will be prepared to kill as much as they are prepared to kill right now.

Military training would have to also provide training in some other field so that they'll be gainfully employed on leaving the military.

The idea of making it compulsory for men and women seemingly equitable, really doesn't do us any good. Women should be allowed to join, but not compelled to join.
