Colombia end T&T dream
published: Saturday | August 25, 2007

Germany's goalkeeper Fabian Giefer (1) stifles a header with help of his teammate Nils Teixeira (4) and Toni Kroos (10) to keep Ghana's Sadick Adams (9) from scoring during their match at the 2007 FIFA Under-17 World Cup in Cheonan, south of Seoul, South Korea, on Thursday. Germany defeated Ghana 3-2.

CHEONAN, South Korea (CMC):

Trinidad AND Tobago were condemned to the boot, when Colombia belted them 5-0 in the FIFA Under-17 World Cup on Thursday.

The Junior Soca Warriors virtually have no chance of reaching the second round of the competition, after the Colombians kicked the door wide open in Group F with their commanding victory.

'HOPE FOR A MIRACLE'

T&T's goalkeeper Glenroy Samuel said in a post-match interview that they were crestfallen by the defeat, which followed a 4-1 loss to Ghana in their opening match.

"I'm very disappointed," he said. "We wanted to win this match and represent our country to the best of our abilities. Now all we can do is hope for a miracle. We can beat Germany, though. I'm satisfied with the way I personally played, but unfortunately that wasn't enough. In any case, it's all good experience for us here at this tournament."

T&T did well to restrict the Colombians to a 1-0 lead at half-time, after Andres Felipe Mosquera rose highest at a corner and planted a bullet header past Samuel to open the scoring in the 20th minute.

After the break, the Trinidadians created their best chance of the match, with a left-foot strike from centre-forward Stephen Knox flying inches wide of the far post. That was as good as it got for the Caribbean team, as the Colombians went to work. The Colombians doubled their lead on the hour through Santiago Trellez and stretched the lead with Mosquera nodding home a carbon copy of the first goal from a corner.

Edgar Pardo came on and immediately notched the fourth on 68 minutes, before another substitute Ricardo Serna completed the scoring.
