Top seeds to clash in women’s final today
published: Saturday | July 21, 2007

Kwesi Mugisa, Staff Reporter

NUMBER TWO seed Danielle Mills of the United States will be out to topple top seed Francesca Segarelli of the Dominican Republic when the ITF Jamaica Junior Championships girls’ final serves off at 9:00 a.m. today at the Eric Bell Tennis Centre.

In a rematch of the St. Maarten Junior Open held two weeks ago, American Jason Zafiros will hope to repeat his victory over number one ranked Alex Llompart of Puerto Rico, in the boys’ final which will immediately follow the girls.

There won’t be much to cheer about from a patriotic point of view as the last Jamaican in the draw, Simone Brown, was knocked out in the quarter-finals of the girls’ event on Thursday.

However, there should be plenty to applaud for the tennis enthusiasts as both finals promise to be entertaining affairs.

While Zafiros is the underdog heading into today’s event, the American has been in good form and beat Llompart in straight sets when the two met in the Netherland Antilles recently.

The top ranked Puerto Rican has already been made to work hard this tournament as encounters against David Souto of Venezuela and Diego Acosta of Ecuador have gone three sets, which means that Llompart will have to dig deep to stave off the American. Zafiros, on the other hand, has only been forced to go three sets against Jamaica’s Brandon Burke.

In yesterday’s semi-finals, Llompart blasted his way past number three seed Michael Davis of Great Britain 6-1, 6-3, while Zafiros easily dismissed Mexico’s Santiago Nieto 6-1, 6-2.

In girls’ action, Segarelli had no problems in easily downing Canada’s Sara Lazarevic 6-1, 6-1.

Mills, who beat Brown, faced a much tougher battle against hard-hitting countrywoman Ann Mulholland. Mills took the first set 6-2, dropped the second 2-6 before recovering to take the third 6-3.

In doubles action completed yesterday, Mexican Nieto teamed up with Uriel Oquendo of Colombia to lift the boys’ Under-19 title after beating Rodney Carey of the Bahamas and Kevin Deligny of St. Lucia 6-2, 6-2.

Although opponents on the court today, Mills teamed up with Segarelli to beat Lazarevic and Sasha Gluck (U.S.) 6-3, 6-0 for the girls’ doubles crown.
