Unbeaten St Ann clinch Cup crown
published: Wednesday | July 18, 2007

ST. ANN completed the formalities of winning the 2007 Red Stripe Senior Cup cricket championship last weekend when they gained first innings points from Police in a rain-affected match at Elletson Road Police ground.

Batting first after winning the toss, St. Ann made 274 all out on Saturday. Top batsmen Xavier Marshall (18) and skipper Orville Pennant (21) failed to impact on the scoreboard, as Marshall, who opened the innings, was bowled by Under-19 pacer Sheldon Cottrell at 42 for one, while Pennant went leg before to offspinner Harold Vassell at 94 for four.

St. Ann skidded to 127 for seven at one stage, but Police were held at bay by the lower-order batsmen, led by Ramone Medwynter (49 not out), Patrick Harty Jr. (37), last man Arlington Kelly (30) and Richard Dacres (14). Earlier in the innings, opener Marlon Johnson made 30. Vassell finished with three for 38 and Cottrell two for 27.

Police bowled out

Police, in reply, were bowled out for 206 by offspinner Marshall (five for 96) and legspinner Pennant (four for 45). Opener Kemar Anderson made 37 and Ordane Hutchinson 31.

Batting a second time, St. Ann reached 155 for two when rain curtailed play about 25 minutes after lunch. Marshall and Pennant were unbeaten on 73 and 37 respectively.

St. Ann topped the standings with 38 points, going through the season unbeaten in the process. AT PORT ESQUIVEL: Portland crushed St. Catherine Parish by 10 wickets to finish third behind St. Ann and Hanover.

St. Catherine Parish - 120 (Errol Downer 36; Randy Gray 3-34) and 124 (Corey Thompson 4-30), Portland 233 (Emelio Reid 95, Carl Brissett 41; Colin Buchanan 6 for 60) and 12 without loss. There was no play in the other three matches.
