1987 - Nation said farewell to Edna Manley
published: Wednesday | July 18, 2007

A festive air prevailed at a luncheon meeting of the Soroptimist Club when guests of honour were Lady Bustamante (left) and Her Excellency, Lady Campbell (right). The guests are seen with Mrs. Edna Manley, president of the club. Lady Campbell is an honorary member and was attending her first meeting, which took place at the Flamingo hotel.

45 MILESTONES - 1962-2007: 45 years of nationhood

Every day until August 6, The Gleaner looks back at significant milestones that have helped shape the nation. Don't miss this nostalgic journey.

Edna Manley, the widow of National Hero Norman Manley, and the mother of former Prime Minister of Jamaica, Michael Manley and his brother, a former Minister of Government, Douglas Manley, died at the age of 87. She was given a state funeral and was buried beside her husband in National Heroes Park.

She was a great sculptor and a patron of the arts. She influenced and encouraged many of Jamaica's leading artists, among them being Albert Huie, Karl Parboosingh, Barrington Watson. She was awarded the Order of Merit, and was the recipient of the first Gold Musgrave Medal.

Some international personalities visited our shores in 1987. They include Margaret Thatcher, then PrimeMinister of Britain who visited Jamaica in July, President Miguel de la Madrid of Mexico and President Dr. AUELI Masire of Botswana.
