Gordon-Martin to depart Advantage General

Andrea Gordon-Martin, president of Advantage General, is to leave the organisation shortly, Wednesday Business understands, months after the $6 billion insurance company's rebranding by new owner Michael Lee Chin.

Last night, business sources said former financial controller at Cable and Wireless Jamaica, Mark Thompson, was tipped for the job. Calls to Thompson's phone went straight to voicemail.

Sources say Gordon-Martin has advised the company of her departure, but was asked to stay on until a replacement is found so as not to leave the company rudderless.

Lee Chin, who owns 80 per cent of Advantage General, previously United General Insurance, has been leading a process of transformation at the company, taking much the same approach, Wednesday Business was advised, that he did with National Commercial Bank when he acquired it in 2002.

Then the billionaire made it clear he was serious about business and intent on results.

At Advantage's relaunch in March, the Lee Chin team had indicated that the company would have been restructured.

Wednesday Business understands that two other senior staff have already left the insurance company.

Mum's the word

Contacted, Gordon-Martin said only that a statement on changes at the company was pending.

"I would prefer not to comment on that at this time," she said, advising that Wednesday Business to await an official press release to come from the company shortly.

Gordon-Martin has worked at UGI for more than a decade, holding several senior management positions, including general manager and technical services manager.

After the transition of UGI into Lee Chin's hand, she was chosen by the Canadian billionaire to head the new company.

Up to press time Wednesday Business was unable to contact director and spokesperson for Advantage General, Shamena Khan, for comment on the departures and an insight into the transformation of the company.

Advantage General is a subsidiary of AIC Barbados.

Lee Chin, through AIC Barbados, paid Neville Blythe $750 million for it. The board includes Robert Almeida, John L.M. Bell, Dennis Cohen, Andrea Gordon-Martin, Aubyn Hill, Shamena Khan, Peter Thwaites, Donovan Lewis, David Williams, Stephanie Cox Neita and Lee Chin as chairman.
