FORMER WEST Indies batsman Wavell Hinds hit top form against Melbourne on yesterday's opening day of the two-day Jamaica Cricket Association (JCA) Super Cup.
In the match at Kensington Oval, Hinds, who played 45 Test matches for the West Indies, stood firm with an unbeaten knock of 203 for the hosts.
Hinds, who has scored 2,608 runs with a top score of 213 at the Test level, almost single-handedly carried Kensington to 327 for seven at the close of play.
In his innings, which saw him face the first and last deliveries of the entire first day, Hinds hit 17 fours and six sixes from 325 balls.
Rasheed Outar was the next best scorer with 27.
Strong position
Meanwhile, Shane Powell scored an even century and Wayne Simpson took six wickets to put joint leaders St. Elizabeth in a strong position for full points over Westmoreland at Alpart.
Westmoreland, batting first, were blown away for 78 with Simpson taking 6-12 and Conroy Miller 2-33.
In reply, Powell's 100 helped St. Elizabeth to 290 for six declared. Davian Davidson chipped in with 66 and Christopher Dyer 40 against Myron Wilson (2-125).
Still 159 runs behind, Westmore-land will resume on 53 for two.
At Chedwin Park, Jamaica Defence Force (JDF), who shared the lead with St. Elizabeth on 17 points each, and St. Catherine CC are locked in a close battle for first innings honours.
St. Catherine first made 276. Junior Stewart, 81, and Dean Morgan, 58, led the way against Kamal Dennis, 3-57, Howard Copeland, 2-50, and Akhbar Moodie, 2-51. The JDF will resume today at 80 for three.
At Sabina Park, Kingston and Manchester are in another close tussle for first innings' honours.
Batting first, Kingston made 161 with Chadwick Walton getting 40 against Damain Sangster, 3-3, and Donovan Sinclair, 2-37.
Manchester closed on 112 for five. Zaniffe Fowler made 34, while Paul Harrison has so far taken 2-10.
At Nelson Oval, Lorenzo Ingram scored 101 to help Trelawny to 268. Carlington Johnson, with 53, supported Ingram, whose innings included 10 fours and two sixes off 155 balls.
Lucas will resume on 37 for one today.
