TRAINER ERROL Waugh yesterday posted a fine double at Caymanas Park, landing the last two events on the 10-race card with 17-1 outsider NATURAL DESIRE and 5-2 chance MAGDALA.
Philip Feanny also saddled two winners, down in class DIESEL in the opening event and STRONG DELIVERY in the fourth, but Waugh's double, in particular NATURAL DESIRE, stumped punters at the back-end of the programme.
Kicked out of the betting dominated by even-money favourite GOOD COMPANY and PITTACUS at 2-1, NATURAL DESIRE was extensively warmed up by jockey Oneil Mullings and left the gate disputing the lead.
GOOD COMPANY, sent down in class to Overnight Allowance by champion trainer Wayne DaCosta, led the one-mile race under pressure from CHOSEN ONE with NATURAL DESIRE stalking in third before making his move leaving the half-mile marker.
Pushed to the lead
Full of running along the rail, NATURAL DESIRE was pushed to the lead 2 1/2 furlongs out by Mullings as ROYAL COMMAND, under Trevor Simpson, made a sweeping move on the outside to go second off the home turn.
ROYAL COMMAND loomed large but NATURAL DESIRE was already in full flight and ran away to post a fast 1:38.3, winning by eight lengths.
Waugh was back in the winners' enclosure to greet MAGDALA in the closing 1000-metre straight event as the four-year-old filly prompted the pace from post position 10 before storming past YOSHI and DOMINADOR inside the final half-furlong.
Mullings and Malcolm both had second winners on the programme. Mullings improved from third to second in the jockeys' standings on 29 winners as he had earlier won the fifth event astride Robert Darby Sr.'s BLACK RIVER at 1000 metres straight.
Malcolm moved his tally to 26 wins and joint fourth in the table, posting his first win in the eighth event aboard Percy Tomlinson's MITAKA to land the Joshua Morrison Memorial Cup at 1500 metres.
Place in standings
Paul Francis maintained his one-win lead in the standings by booting home MEDICAL REPORT in the 1100-metre seventh race for Open Allowance runners, outfinishing DIGI N' JIGGY and NASATOL in a stretch duel.
Francis is on 30 wins, one ahead of Mullings and Javour Simpson, who maintained the chase by winning the sixth aboard ISLAND CIGAR.
NATURAL DESIRE'S stunning upset resulted in just four winning Pick-9 combinations, each picking up $408,000.
The Super-6, which also included NATURAL: DESIRE, returned $28, 873.
Earlier in the afternoon, trainer Allan E. 'Billy' Williams' three-year-old filly, OUTSTANDING, romped to another impressive victory in the 1100-metre third race following her runaway debut on May 13.
One of two winners on the card for Trevor Simpson, OUTSTANDING ripped a hole into the wind, clocking 1:06.2 for a 14-length win, running into a strong headwind for the final two furlongs.
