McKenzie taking two firms to court - Burger King, Escape 24/7 cited for breaches
published: Wednesday | December 13, 2006

Gareth Manning, Staff Reporter

MCKENZIE

Mayor of Kingston Desmond McKenzie says he will be taking court action against two companies that have failed to comply with municipal regulations.

The companies against which legal action is to be taken are Burger King and the New Kingston nightclub, Escape 24/7.

"No attempts have been made by Burger King since 1999 to have their signs legalised," the mayor said yesterday during the council's monthly meeting.

Requests ignored

"Contacts have been made, but they continue to ignore the council's requests," he continued.

The mayor said the council made similar requests to Escape 24/7 to obtain an amusement licence from the Kingston and St. Andrew Corporation (KSAC), but that the club has not done so.

He explained that all events must have the approval of the KSAC and that the corporation will be increasing its drive to ensure that all promoters and places of amusement abide by the regulations during the Christmas season.

"We will be publishing a list of the events that have been approved every Thursday in the press and those events which are not included will be subject to the sanctions allowed under the regulations," Mayor McKenzie said.

He added that a list of unauthorised events and places of amusement will be sent to the police and the National Solid Waste Manage-ment Authority so that action can be taken against promoters and business owners.
