Poor finishing frustrates Seba coach Maxwell
published: Tuesday | November 14, 2006

Western Bureau:

Newcomers August Town garnered an important point on the road on Sunday when they turned in a spirited performance to register a come-from-behind 1-1 draw against Seba United in their 2006-07 Wray and Nephew NPL fixture at Jarrett Park, in Montego Bay.

The Seba United team, which has been plagued by inconsistent form all season, took a first-half lead through Norman Foster, but the resolute August Town outfit rallied strongly to grab an equaliser through Zico Herrera late in the half.

"I thought we showed a lot of character here today because we gave up a goal against the run of play but did well enough to get a share of the points," said August Town's coach Christopher Bender, whose team dropped to 10th place on 10 points.

"Had we been a little more clinical today we could have won the game."

For Seba United's coach Geoffrey Maxwell it was a case of his defenders letting him down and his attackers failing to deliver the goods.

"We played poorly in defence as we allowed the August Town team room to come at us," noted Maxwell, who is presently on a recruitment drive seeking quality players. "In addition, we continue to create good chances and we're not making use of them. It is really frustrating."

The game started at a brisk pace with August Town looking to push Seba United back with their speed, but a combination of anxiety and inconsistent finishing robbed them of a chance to make use of their early opportunities.

With the game 14 minutes old, Seba took the lead when Foster broke free on the right side of the goal and cracked a savage shot from 25 yards out, which flew over the head of goalkeeper Devon Haughton and into the roof of the net, making the score 1-0.

Rebound

August Town rebounded strongly and had Seba on the run for long periods as they hunted the equalizer, but two glaring misses by David Stultz kept them off the scoresheet. However, they finally got it right in the 41st minute when Herrera got behind the Seba defence and crashed home, making the halt-time score 1-1.

In the second half, both teams were guilty of missing chances as the two battled in vain for maximum three points. A minute into the second half, Wilfred Smith wasted the easiest of chances when he danced around the goalkeeper but hesitated and then had his shot blocked.

With August Town in charge and dominating, Seba United introduced veteran midfield star Theodore Whitmore to stem the flow but his presence did not significantly impact the smooth flowing opposition, which continued to create and miss chances.

Seba almost stole the game on full-time when Ricardo Geddes got away clean on the goalkeeper but instead of picking his spot, he fired straight at the advancing custodian.

Seba 1

Norman Foster (14th minute)

August Town 1

Zico Herrera (41st)
