Waterhouse avoid trap
published: Friday | October 13, 2006

Kwesi Mugisa, Staff Reporter

WRAY AND Nephew National Premier League defending champions Waterhouse are keen to avoid the trap which saw them forced to dig their way out of a 13-point hole and emerge triumphant last season.

Following a 3-0 win over Naggo Head on Wednesday, Waterhouse are now on 10 points, two behind league leaders Harbour View, who notched a 3-1 victory over Seba. " We really intend to stay very close to anyone who is at the top of the table this season. It's too much work to chase and we don't want to be facing that scenario again," said Waterhouse coach Barrington Gaynor, after seeing his team effortlessly dispose of league newcomers Naggo Head at the Waterhouse stadium on Wednesday evening.

"Right now, Harbour View are in the lead, but we will be looking to get level or better and move past them in the weeks to come," Gaynor, who took over from Wayne Fairclough this season, said.

Halftime lead

Recent acquisition Brian Wolla-ston netted a brace, scoring in the seventh and 20th minutes to give Waterhouse a halftime lead over a Naggo Head team that never looked likely to threaten goal.

"We were knocked a bit flat by the early goal and we were never really able to recover from that point on. We were just out of it today," said Naggo Head assistant coach Anthony Patrick.

In a second half which saw the Cup holders create numerous chances to extend their lead, Irvino English finally finished things off from the penalty spot in the 73rd minute.

English coolly rolled the ball wide of Naggo Head custodian Dennis Clayton after national player Demar Phillips was brought down just inside the area after a penetrating charge to goal.
