ITS PAGES were void of pictures and illustrations. Yet for brothers Jacob and Joshua deCordova, Saturday, September 13, 1834, must have been one of their brighter days.
Their baby - a newspaper christened The Gleaner and Weekly Compendium of News - was born.
On that memorable day, the publishers could not resist pulling on the literary works of renowned playwright William Shakespeare. Page one bore this quote from his play, The Merchant of Venice: "Picked from the chaff and ruin of the times to be new varnished!"
Nowadays, topical news, sports, entertainment, crime and human interest stories dominate the
front page.
And 172 years later, the newspaper, one of the oldest in the Western Hemisphere, continues to be a standard bearer in the local print media. For this, we say a special thank you to our readers and advertisers.
