Player injured, match abandoned
published: Sunday | September 10, 2006

HAMILTON, Scotland (AP):

A SCOTTISH soccer match was abandoned 15 minutes early yesterday after a player needed to be resuscitated on the field after he was hit in the neck.

Hamilton Academical defender Ross McCabe needed nearly 20 minutes of CPR when he was hurt in the Division One match against Clyde. The match was abandoned in the 75th, with the score level at 3-3.

"Ross made a very strong tackle on Clyde player Dougie Imrie and was caught in the throat by the player's studs," Hamilton said in a statement on its web-site. "He collapsed immediately.

"With a first aider administering CPR to Ross, the atmosphere turned extremely nasty on the pitch and referee (Charlie) Richmond told both sets of players to return to their dressing rooms."

The statement said the second-division game was abandoned after a 15-minute delay.
