Man U edge past Spurs to remain unbeaten
published: Sunday | September 10, 2006

LONDON (AP):

MANCHESTER UNITED maintained its 100 per cent record in the English Premier League with a 1-0 win over Tottenham yesterday.

Ryan Giggs scored in the ninth minute for United, who haven't lost to Spurs at Old Trafford in 17 years. The match was played in front of a Premier League record crowd of 75,453.

United have 12 points from their four matches. Portsmouth and Everton, who also won yesterday, have 10 points each.

"We probably just edged it today," United manager Alex Ferguson said. "We are pleased with the result because we have beaten a good side today."

Everton beat Liverpool 3-0 in the 204th Merseyside derby - Everton's biggest winning margin since 1964. Andy Johnson scored two goals and Tim Cahill added the other.

"We have not won many in the past against Liverpool, who have a terrific team, but give credit to the players," Everton manager David Moyes said.

Also, it was: Arsenal 1, Middlesbrough 1; Bolton 1, Watford 0; Chelsea 2, Charlton 1; Newcastle 1, Fulham 2; Portsmouth 1, Wigan 0; and Sheffield United 0, Blackburn 0.

At Old Trafford, Giggs headed the ball past goalkeeper Paul Robinson after Cristiano Ronaldo's free kick hit the bar.

United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar saved shots from Michael Dawson and Ledley King, who was making his return after five months out with a knee injury.

Everton scored their first goal in the 24th minute, when Cahill took a cross from Lee Carsley and beat Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina from six metres.

Liverpool nearly equalised soon after, with Everton goalkeeper Tim Howard turning away Luis Garcia's drive and Steven Gerrard hitting the post with the rebound.

Gerrard then curled a shot wide before Everton scored again. Carsley crossed to new signing Johnson, who got past England teammate Jamie Carragher in the 36th minute.
