Ackee may re-enter US market soon
published: Friday | September 8, 2006

The interim findings of the long-awaited ackee study have indicated that high levels of hypoglycin in the fruit packaged for consumption was an islandwide problem.

The three-phase study is being conducted by Technological Solutions Limited.

Last December, the export of ackee to the United States was halted after unacceptable levels of the toxin was found in 31 cases of the fruit being shipped to that country.

Meanwhile, president of the Jamaica Exporters' Association (JEA), Dr. André Gordon, says the island should be able to regain access to the U.S. market within the next three to six weeks.

He said the JEA was working with the Agriculture Ministry, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and other stakeholders to implement systems for the reopening of the market.
