National Water Commission (NWC) washed away defending champions Carib Cement's title retention hopes, when they stopped them 2-0 in KSAFA Business House Division One semi-final action at the Old Men's Hockey Field on Saturday.
Captain Fitzroy Anglin struck an early blow for the 2002 champions when he converted a penalty in the 13th minute. However, Carib Cement had been gifted with an earlier opportunity when they were awarded an eighth-minute penalty. Water Commission custodian Leroy Gray who had a good game, did well to stop the initial Milton Griffiths attempt and was even better in reacting quickly to parry away the second.
Chasing the game, the dethroned champions had plenty of possession but failed to convert, as between a combination of their own wayward shooting and solid defending by a water-tight Commission back line they just could not find the break-through they desperately sought. Patrick Edmunson would put the issue beyond doubt for the Water Commission team, breaking away on the counter to net in the 79th minute.
The wait
Having secured their spot in the final, National Water Commission will have to wait to know their opponents, as the other semi-final between The Gleaner and UWI at the National Water Commission field was called off after 35 minutes with a 1-1 score-line due to the effects of heavy rainfall on the playing surface. The game has been rescheduled for tomorrow at 3:30 at the Old Men's Hockey Field.
In Division Two semi-final action Petrojam's ambitions of promotion to the top division were once again held in check as they went down
3-0 to Courts. The Petroleum company, who led Division Two for most of the season and have now fallen at the semi-final hurdle for the second year running, were rocked by goals from Keane Bruce, Jermaine Oakley and Omari Dennis. In the day's other semi-final Shipping Association of Jamaica came from a goal behind to sting Supreme Ventures 3-1. Courts will now face Petrojam in the Division Two final this Saturday at a venue to be decided.
