The Editor, Sir:
At this point in time, as we in Jamaica, which is the largest English-speaking independent nation in the Caribbean, of which 95 per cent are of African decent, along with other Garveyites of other nations and African descendants in the diaspora celebrate the anniversary of the birth (17.8.1887) of our first National Hero, Marcus Mosiah Garvey, we must recall that he told his people that education was the medium for the advancement and glory of the black race.
It was my mentor and inspirer, the Rt. Excellent Marcus Garvey, the chief hero of the African race, who told his people in the 1920s, that we must create our own institutions. He said, "if you have no confidence in self you are twice defeated in the race of life."
During his lifetime, he would constantly educate us and gave us wonderful insights on a number of issues which are relevant in our society today.
Mr. Garvey inspired and motivated us as a people, therefore it would only be fitting at this time, 44 years of independence, to introduce the teachings of Marcus Garvey (Garveyism) in our school curriculum.
I am, etc.,
