Triumph for volunteerism
published: Monday | August 28, 2006

The Editor, Sir:

Congratulations to the president and the hard-working members, of the Citizens Association of the Passagefort Housing Scheme on winning the Better Neighbourhood/Best Scheme competition.

This competition was promoted by the Portmore Municipal Council to, inter alia, "encourage community residents to fulfil their civic responsibilities through participation and volunteerism in order to achieve a sustainable community."

The president and his team certainly worked assiduously to win the competition and the prize. The president declared that he wanted the prize and his team of dedicated volunteers certainly supported him.

Many residents of Passagefort Housing Scheme are proud of how the community centre was maintained and utilised. Much effort was put into preserving the playing fields in the area.

The success of the president and his team is a triumph for volunteerism. The residents of the community have been pledging that other communities will have to try very hard to win the prize in the future.

I am sure that the mayor and councillors of the municipality are proud of the citizens of the Passagefort Housing Scheme. They should be using this community and playing area as the model to which to direct other community leaders.

Once again, congrats to the president and his team. It is hoped that this success will inspire more participation in the activities of the citizens association.

I am, etc.,

V.L. RODGERS
