People's National Party (PNP) manifesto nearly completed
published: Friday | August 25, 2006

Edmond Campbell, Senior News Coordinator

General Secretary of the People's National Party (PNP), Colin Campbell, says work on the party's manifesto is well advanced.

Mr. Campbell told The Gleaner yesterday that a special committee, which was appointed to prepare the document, is close to completing its task.

Meanwhile, the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) says its manifesto will be ready by next month. JLP general secretary Karl Samuda says the executive of the party is reviewing the draft document and is expected to approve it in September.

The next general election is constitutionally due in 2007, but many pundits are of the view that Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller may sound the trumpet for national elections before year-end.

In preparation for political campaigns both major parties formulate policies and proposals to articulate their positions on critical issues including the economy, education, health, crime and violence, housing, job opportunities and investment, among others.

A recent Gleaner-commissioned Bill Johnson Poll showed the PNP losing ground with an increasing number of electors slipping into the category of undecided while the JLP ratings remained unchanged.
