Red Hills Post Office to be a tourist attraction
published: Monday | June 12, 2006

Junior Grandison, Gleaner Writer

SAVANNA-LA-MAR, Westmoreland:

THE JAMAICA Business Development Centre and the Tourism Product Development Company (TPDCo) will jointly be spending some $5 million develop the Red Hills Post Office into a one-stop tourist attraction and craft shop.

Plans for the development were outlined by Steve Dunkley, business development officer, Jamaica Business Development Centre, at the monthly meeting of the Westmoreland Parish Council held at the St. George Anglican Church Hall, Savanna-la-Mar, recently. This new attraction will be known as the Red Hills Craft and Rest Stop.

It is anticipated that the new venture will provide employment for some 15 woodcarvers who currently operate at this location. Overall, he said some 50 persons will benefit indirectly.

INCOME GENERATION

Among the objectives for this project, as outlined by Mr. Dunkley, are income generation for the community, provision of an outlet for craft and other products, training for the craftsmen, and the harnessing of youth talent.

The renovation of this new facility will include a covered area to be used by the woodcarvers; showroom for all products; bathroom/sanitation facility; two food concessionaries and a bus park to accommodate tour buses.
