What benefits to Jamaica?
published: Monday | June 12, 2006

THE EDITOR, Sir:

FOR MANY years, the increase/decrease of cruise ship arrivals in Jamaica has been emphasised by tourism authorities and the media. I am sure that these arrivals have had, in many cases, a positive impact in terms of international visibility and promotion for the image of our country.

But I am curious to know the direct/indirect real economic and financial benefits for Jamaica arising from this kind of quick and "all inclusive" tourism.

How much is the average expenditure in Jamaica of each tourist? How much are the other incomes per ship, like harbour rights, landing fees, refuelling, catering, etc.? And how much are the costs and expenses related to the ships and the tourist arrivals?

Such data would allow the public to fully understand the repercussions on our economy of the expected additional 100,000 cruise ship passenger arrivals in the next six months.

I am, etc.,

DR. SALVATORE T. ALFANO
