I GOT FROM DADDY ...
published: Monday | June 12, 2006

Shelly-Ann Thompson, Freelance Writer

THOSE WHO grew up with their fathers are able to identify at least one trait they share in common. These include: strength of character, punctuality, persistence, resilience, thrift, respect for others and a good work ethic.

Flair asked a few of Jamaica's influential personalities: How has your father's influence helped to shape who you are as an adult.

Wayne Chen, businessman:

I am a product of both parents. However my father is a patient, steady, unflappable person who loves to read and study. And, I think a lot has rubbed off on me. Especially my love for reading. All these I'm passing on to my children.

Blossom O'Meally Nelson, businesswoman:

My father was probably the single most influential person in my life. A man of strong character, very firm, but at the same time very considerate, totally committed to his family. He was a teacher par excellence and later a public servant. I learnt to give service to community and my country and the importance of community groups, of being practical. Meaning that I can use a hammer, nail and a saw. Plus, I have garnered respect for persons no matter their status in life.

Audrey Hinchcliffe, Chief Executive Officer, Manpower Maintenance Services:

My father was a disciplinarian who first applied Christian principles in the home that we dared not depart from . I also learnt the sense of order, and all this I pass to my children and everybody around me including my staff members.

Nancy McLean, Hotelier:

My father played a very integral role in my life. I learnt to be a humble human being. He also played a vital role in Jamaica being a sportsman. From him I learnt humility and about service to country. I pass this on to all sorts of folks I interact with. Unfortunately he is not with me today.

Patrick Hylton, Banker:

My father had a very significant influence on my life. He set an exemplary standard for us; his principles, values, behaviour and the dialogue he had with me while growing up, have made me into the person I am today. He was also very supportive as a family man. Every day in dealing with my staff and friends I pass on the qualities I garnered from my father.
