THE NATIONAL Works Agency (NWA) is assuring members of the distributive trade that parish teams are prepared in the event of a disaster to make the roads clear for the transportation of goods during this hurricane season.
According to Stephen Shaw, communications manager at the NWA, the works agency has the responsibility to ensure that all roads remain passable and are reopened quickly in the event of a disaster.
Dolsie Allen, chief executive officer at the Consumer Affairs Commission (CAC), told The Gleaner/Power 106 News Centre last week that operators of the distributive trade have promised that there would not be any unnecessary price increases during the hurricane season once the roadways remain clear.
"Once the roadways are clear, distributors have promised that adequate supplies of items will be out there in the market ... and the prices will remain stable," she said.
In the aftermath of Hurricane Ivan in 2004, a list of 18 suppliers across the island were accused of price gouging. But according to Mrs. Allen, the CAC has implemented the necessary precautionary measures to avoid another such occurrence.
