MINISTER OF National Security Dr. Peter Phillips flew to London
yesterday to lobby for greater resources to improve security in participating
countries during Cricket World Cup 2007.
Regional heads requested that Dr. Phillips, who chairs the ministerial committee on the World Cup security, make the journey following last week's meeting of regional security ministers in Barbados where it was decided more resources were needed.
It is understood that, besides the United Kingdom Govern-ment, other international partners interested in security at the event will also attend the discussions.
Jamaica recently held a joint police/military exercise in preparation for the event, which involved over 1,400 troops and 13 regional countries.
PROVIDED SUPPORT
The exercise, Operation Tradewinds, is held annually, but for the past two years has focused on World Cup security.
The U.K. and the United States provided significant support with training, transport, logistics, equipment and resources.
Also with Dr. Phillips in London will be officials from his ministry, the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) and the CARICOM Implementation Task Force for Regional Security, headed by former Commissioner of Police Francis Forbes.
Dr. Phillips will also have discussions with U.K. officials on the deportation issue. He is expected to return on Saturday.
