A RESOLUTION calling for another review of the 155-year-old Libel and Slander Act was introduced in Parliament on Tuesday.

The act, which was enacted in 1851, was last reviewed in 1973.

Leader of Opposition Business in the House, Derrick Smith, moved the motion on behalf of Opposition Leader and Member of Parliament for West Kingston, Bruce Golding.

Mr. Golding wants Parliament to appoint a joint select committee to review the existing legislation and recommend changes, as it considers appropriate, to ensure that it is consistent with modern best practices. The committee would be mandated to invite submissions from the public to assist it in its deliberations.

Member of Parliament for St. Catherine, North Eastern, Abe Dabdoub, introduced a motion on Tuesday entitled: "An act to make provision for the registration and funding of political parties and for matters connected therewith and incidental thereto."

Mr. Dabdoub recently resigned from the Jamaica Labour Party and is now an independent MP.
