No security beef-up at Glenhope after death
published: Tuesday | May 30, 2006

NO INTERIM measures to beef up safety at the Glenhope Place of Safety have been put in place by the Child Development Agency (CDA).

Earlier this month, two-year-old Joel Wong died in hospital after ingesting medication that was not prescribed for him.

Rashida St. Juste, public relations manager at the CDA, told The Gleaner yesterday that the CDA's internal investigations were still incomplete and, as such, no measures have been put in place.

She said some vital pieces of information were still missing, such as the post-mortem report and, therefore, the investigations were still incomplete. She said the CDA had yet to ascertain the cause of death of the infant.

At the time of the incident, The Gleaner had reported that the child took the tablets from the tray of an attendant who was dispensing medication to sick children and had given them to seven others, telling them they were sweets. The children were hospitalised and Joel died in hospital while the others recovered and were released.

The incident, which occurred earlier this month, resulted in the Ministry of Health setting up a Review Committee to probe the circumstances surrounding the death of the two-year-old ward.

REVIEW COMMITTEE

Dr. Colin Abel, of the Bustamante Children's Hospital, was appointed to head the Review Committee. The other two members of the committee are Flo O'Connor, former head of the Independent Jamaica Council for Human Rights, and Gail Hudson, director of Human Resource Management and Corporate Services at the Ministry of Health.

According to the Ministry, the investigation is expected to last four weeks, after which, a report is to be submitted to Health Minister Horace Dalley.

Meanwhile, Mrs. St. Juste said the infant was buried on Friday.
