St James to beautify Sam Sharpe Square this Labour Day
published: Friday | May 12, 2006

WESTERN BUREAU:

THE BEAUTIFICATION of Sam Sharpe Square, which will include upgrading work on the fountain, was chosen as the parish project for Labour Day in St. James.

The Ministry of Tourism, Entertainment and Culture has allocated $100,000 to the St. James Parish Council to aid with the implementation of the project.

The scope of work should include the repair/upgrading of the fencing around the fountain and repairs to the fountain itself. A new pump will also be installed.

The area around the fountain is to be landscaped to enhance the beauty of the town centre. Also, pedestrian crossings and road partition lines will be repainted in order to promote some sense of order to the traffic flow and enhance the safety of pedestrians.

This year's St. James Labour Day Church Service will be held on Sunday, May 21 at the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Reading, starting at 10:00 am.

COMMUNITY GROUPS

The Social Development Commission will be assisting this effort by registering volunteers and promoting the involvement of community groups in order to boost participation.

Forms for the registration of community projects can be accessed at the Parish Council Municipal Building at 19a Union Street, Montego Bay.
