Treating our workers right
published: Friday | May 12, 2006

THE EDITOR, Sir:

WHY IS it that these public sector workers are being treated in a manner that is so unfair? The last MoU has left them 30-40 per cent poorer than they were in 2000. These people deserve a medal to have survived on what the MoU gave them, especially when prime ministers were getting pay raises, when they were the only public sector workers who were not suffering economic hardships.

Why have we not considered that. If their workers were being paid well, all our state agencies/ institutions would perform and serve the public better. There would be no strikes, no 'bandooloism' with the police, and criminals, and wages would keep up with the inflation.

Let's give our public employees what they really and truly deserve. Give it to them in dollars, and we will get it back in service. A rising tide lifts all boats. Jamaica needs a surge of national conscience to raise her above the failed policies of the last 17 years.

I am, etc.,

HUGH STEPHENS
