AS EXPECTED, Jamaica topped the medal tables for the 22nd consecutive year, when the curtain fell on the 35th CARIFTA Track and Field Cham-pionships at the Rene-Serge Nabojoth Stadium, Monday.
Jamaica finished with a tally of 68 medals, comprising 39 gold, 21 silver and eight bronze, in another dominant performance at the regional games.
On the final day Monday, Jamaica picked up 15 gold medals including a clean sweep of the 4x400 metres relays, while also collecting eight silver and four bronze.
Apart from the track, Jamaica dominated the field events as well. Yushanni Durant won the girls' Under-17 triple jump with a leap of 11.69 metres, while Jerome Myers captured the boys' long jump in the same age division, with a measurement of 7.24 metres.
Robert Peddler leaped 15.03 metres to walk away with gold in the boys' Under-20 triple jump while Omar Bryan dismissed his competition in the boys' Under-20 discus throw with a measurement of 48.22 metres, well clear of the second placed Quincy Wilson of Trinidad and Tobago with 42.20 metres.
Raymond Brown also laid siege to the boys, Under-20 shot put when he threw 17.06 metres. Teammate Sharif Small picked up bronze in that event with a throw of 14.89 metres.
STAMPED CLASS
Jamaica also enforced their supremacy in the distance events with Kirk Brown winning the 5000 metres open in 15:57.64 minutes while Bobbi-Gaye Wilkins captured the girls' Under-20 800 metres in a time of 2:09.36 minutes.
Jamaica finished one-two in the event as Keno Heavens claimed second in 2:10.38 minutes.
Bahamas also got among the headlines on the final day, snatching three of the four 200 metres sprints.
Nivea Smith clocked 23.66 seconds to win the girls' Under-17 event ahead of Jamaica's Carrie Russell in 23.87 seconds, as Cadajah Spencer of Trinidad and Tobago finished third in a time of 23.91 seconds.
In the corresponding boys' event, Karlton Rolle sped to victory in 21.33 seconds, beating the Jamaican duo of Ramone McKenzie (21.56) and Darrion Bent (21.58) into second and third respectively.
Sheniqua Ferguson kept Bahamas in the forefront with her capture of the girls Under-20 200 metres, timing 23.44 seconds to beat Anastacia Leroy of Jamaica into second in 23.54 seconds, with fellow Bahamian Cache Armbrister, third in 23.98 seconds.
