Unions, Government at odds over settlement offer
published: Wednesday | April 19, 2006

THE GOVERNMENT has put aside $8.8 billion to settle a new wage agreement yet to be signed off with public sector workers.

Dr. Omar Davies, Minister of Finance and Planning, made the disclosure at yesterday's Standing Finance Committee meeting at Gordon House, while responding to questions from Opposition spokesman on finance, Audley Shaw.

Mr. Shaw, however, pointed out to the Finance Minister that the trade union was expecting far more than has been put aside.

The Government and the Jamaica Confederation of Trade Unions (JCTU) are at odds in settling on a new wage agreement.

DISSATISFACTION WITH OFFER

While they have indicated their intention to sign another Memorandum of Understanding, the JCTU has however indicated its dissatisfaction with Government's offer.

The JCTU is expected to meet again on Friday to make a decision on whether it will accept the Government's offer.
