Wisynco's William Mahfood gets ready to roll the dice at the high stakes backgammon tournament at Strawberry Hill, Irish Town, on Saturday, April 8.

Barbara Ellington, Lifestyle Editor

LAST WEEKEND saw a number of events dominating the capital city's social scene.

The scheduled soirée for Manpower and Maintenance's lady boss, Audrey Hinchcliffe, was rescheduled because the innovative one is under the weather. We certainly wish her a speedy and full recovery so that she can kick up her heels and party!

  • Peralto fund-raiser

Friday night saw some top-notch supporters of the Jamaica Labour Party's (JLP) Tarn Peralto rolling out the cheque books in his support in swanky Beverly Hills, St. Andrew. The atmosphere was relaxing and food of the best quality prepared by Lorraine Fung. Warm and Easy provided the music, and guests gathered in clusters around party leader Bruce Golding to share ideas and offer advice.

Mr. Golding, in his brief remarks, spoke of returning a sense of order to all levels of the society.

  • Backgammon tournament

Things kicked into high gear at the picturesque Strawberry Hill Hotel and Spa on Saturday night, where competitors got together to match wits at the invitation of Chris Blackwell, owner of the resort and gracious host for the night.

For an entry fee of $25,000, competitors stood to walk away with $450,000 with the winner getting $140,000.

At 7:00 p.m. dinner prepared by Chef Darren Lee was served in the property's new Yoga Deck. Only the soft glow from Home Sweet Home kerosene lamps provided illumination. But those who lasted for the final rounds were eager to return to the tables for the showdown.

Among them were: Edward Azan, Chris Blackwell, Warren Burrowes, Tino Caldarelli, Lenny Chen, Blaise Hart, Joey Issa, Ryan Rowe, Aliatair Macbeath, William Mahfood, Greg McClure, Fredrik Moe, Gary Peart, Mitta Rousseau, Dwight Sangster, Marvin Shepard, Johnny Todd and Balram Balram

  • Dwight Moore is 44

KIA Motors/Worldtron boss, Dwight Moore, marked his 44th milestone at home with friends and family on Saturday, April 8. As with any other gathering where his close buddies congregate, the vibes were high, good liquor (including Single Malt Scotch) flowed, great food was abundant and many beautiful women were everywhere.

Hot topics included politics, the mysterious video tapes and the saga that seems destined for beneath the carpets, more politics, the upcomimg round of Easter season parties and more politics.

Birthday boy Dwight cut and shared cake with Sharon Millwood and his sons Sean and Dominic led the birthday chorus. Meanwhile, dad Charles Moore, looking dapper as usual, gave some wise counsel to daughter Andrea before setting off to the St. Andrew hills for matters of high importance.
